Improvements and Achievements since 2004
Since designation as a Local Nature Reserve in 2004, the Quarr has been enhanced by:
- All-weather footpath around half the site to allow access for disabled people and pushchairs
- New gates to accommodate disabled people and prevent cyclists entering
- New seats below cliff made by the Gryphon School
- New planting, including black poplar, glastonbury thorn, elms (disease resistant), wild service tree, beech, oak, hornbeam, mountain ash, hose chestnut, walnut, spindle, holly
- New habitats eg. woodpiles, gullies
- Two new visitor information boards (mounted on local Sherborne stone plinths) based on ‘What to see in the Quarr through the seasons’, and another highlighting the significance of the Jurassic cliff face, visible in the north-east corner, which is classed as a Dorset Important Geological Site (DIGS)
- Notice board for news and sightings
- Awards gained include Sherborne In Bloom commendation
- IT additions, eg. Friends of Quarr blog (this website!)
